Here are a few marketing tips to keep in mind when you’re considering launching a new campaign.

  • Most businesses will get 80% of their sales from 20% of their customers. Know exactly who those 20% are and aim your advertising to that segment.
  • Research is a vital part of your marketing plan. Your effort should produce answers to who your prospects are, and where, why, when, and how they are converted into active buyers.
  • As your business grows, prepare a strategic marketing plan looking at how your product or service will meet the long-term needs of your customers.

Many get confused when it comes to launching a campaign because they don’t do the research before getting started. If you don’t have all the facts you are setting yourself up for failure or best yet, loss of $$$.

Don’t jump into the middle and expect everything to be perfect. Start at the beginning and know that you have strategically accomplished all the steps needed to be successful.

Advertising is the process of persuading potential customers to buy products or avail of services being offered to them. The process of advertising involves a variety of strategies. Effective and continuous advertising is one of the most important functions of any successful business. It is imperative that the products or services of any business receive the proper exposure, and the way to achieve exposure is through advertising.

Whether it is on the national or local level, advertising campaigns are necessary to let people know about a business and its products. The goal of marketing is to target the segment of a population who has a special need for a particular product or service and finding ways to provide that product or service in the most effective means possible.

Advertisements may appear in many forms, including newspaper and magazine ads, radio and television commercials, direct mail campaigns, and various other forms. With the emergence of brand recognition as a key factor in marketing and advertising, companies have entered into multi-billion dollar contracts with advertising firms to promote their products and services.

These efforts have led to products becoming integral aspects of popular culture. The function of advertising companies is to professionally promote individual businesses and organizations. Advertising agencies are dedicated to the development of the most innovative and effective means of business promotion.

Even if you can afford major companies like corporations use, there are smaller advertising companies that can help you roll out a plan. Look in your local community for one closest to you and talk to them. Don’t be afraid to test the waters, talking doesn’t cost you money, implementing the plan is what cost. Be sure you scope out all options when it’s time to advertise. And don’t spend all your money in one place. A good plan, no matter how big or how small, uses multiple venue’s of media to be seen and heard. Weigh your options and put a plan into place.

No Time or Money to Market Their Business

I have more people tell me that they don’t have the time or the money to market their company.  This really angers me. Why are you in business if you have no time or money to market it, and then you blame everything except yourself when it fails.  So ready or not here is my response.

“If you build it, he will come.” may have worked in the movie Field of Dreams, but it doesn’t work in real life. You have to go out and market, market, market to get your business recognized, and in any type of business, that requires a lot of personal contact. So step up or get out!

Since the primary value of a customer today is the stream of business which will result from the chain of referrals – I would find people who know about your business and have them start talking long and hard about your services and your product. Word of Mouth is still a strong marketing tool and guess what IT’S FREE!

All of your advertising only brought in what you put out. You did not make a profit the first month, nor the second month. You have attended one fair for a relatively small company and nobody has scheduled with you. You spoke with approximately 12 people, but no appointments yet.  Ok did you really think that it was going to be this easy. How much competition do you have? Have you thought about trust? Building trust? It takes twice as much time to build a relationship with clients due to there being so many people doing the same things and the economy just plain sucks right now.   You have got to be out there daily networking, meeting with people and plugging your business just to get people to remember you.

It’s obvious that you don’t have the working capital to hold on until your business turns profitable, which would take a year or so – even if you had the funds to appropriately market it. My suggestion would be this if you want to continue in this business:

  • Get out and start introducing yourself to local area businesses. Be sure to have a flyer and a business card to leave at each place you visit.
  • Find businesses that could benefit from your product or service and build a relationship with them.
  • Find local networking groups and attend them so that you can make more people aware of your business.
  • Find more fairs/events to attend that will give you alot of exposure to the masses.

If this all fails, cut your losses.  You and only you know when the time is to move forward or get out. I just hope my suggestions help you.

In Today’s World we are fighting just to survive in business. With economy in the grips of hell and families struggling to feed themselves, where do you turn for answers?

God has been and will always be my driving force! If not for having God in my corner, I would probably have closed the doors to my business a year ago. However my faith in God has been my saving grace. I know in my heart that God will provide and He has!

Don’t allow the world to control you, your business or your life. Have the faith to believe that God will provide for all your needs! No Matter What!!
Being in the advertising business in a world where the economy is hanging on to every penny has been a challenge. However, though we have struggled we have survived and our bills have been paid.

That is due to our faith in God providing for our needs.

Getting back to the basics…

Business owners use advertising to create more sales, increase product awareness and build public awareness of brand imagery. Because many use advertising to peddle their wares, it’s all too easy to spend money on advertising only to get lost in the bussel of countless other radio ads, TV spots, printed flyers or online banners. Don’t waste valuable time and money, do the research, find effective advertising tips to develop successful campaigns that resonate with customers. Effective advertising helps you drive home the message with less wasted time and money.

In today’s market, so many are using cut throat tactics to bring in the business. However in today’s economy people just aren’t falling for it. That is why good old fashion marketing and advertising works. Simple yet effective.  That’s right simplicity is the best method of attracting attention to your business and your products.  Look at it this way, when you don’t have to be the biggest or the baddest, (this is the radio or print ads that make you want to barf) but simply the one with good ol’ boy customer service, quality products and having the products available at a good price is going to get alot of attention.

Don’t play the game, create your own. Let your customers know that you have what they need, when they need it. You will be the one that stands out in the massive crowd of competition.

As a Christian I have long ago stopped the games.  I offer my clients great deals and the exposure speaks volumes.  If you are wanting to change up what your currently doing, trying taking a simpler approach. Get back to the basics and utilize the dying art of great customer service.

Do you rely on Faith to Market your Business

Questions first- Answers follow:

1)How many times have you made decisions in your business and had a tight feeling gnawing at you in the pit of your stomach?

→ Many of us have experienced this gnawing in the pit of our stomach. This is the first indication that something just doesn’t feel right in the deal we are about to make. It’s a warning for our spirit, a red flashing light that is given to us. However, it is our choice how we react to it and what decision we make.

2. How many times have you ignored the feeling?

→ Don’t get defensive! Many times we choose to ignore this feeling, thinking that we know this is the right way to go. Sometimes it turns out ok, many times it doesn’t. We justify our actions by telling ourselves that “it was a learning lesson” but we know that it usually ends up making us bitter to which ever media or company we lost our butts too.

3. How many times has that decision come back to bite you in the butt?

→ On a normal, especially for me, when I go against the gut feeling I have a 98% rate of it coming back to bite me in the butt.  This is true in most businesses, however business owners fail to see it until years down the road. Why?  Because the are focusing on what to do to grow their business in a frame of mind that leaves them open to every “best thing since the butter knife” scheme that comes along.

4. How much money has been wasted by making those bad decisions?

→ Thousands of dollars each month are wasted on these bad decisions, especially for new or young companies trying to make their mark on the community and the world.

5. How to avoid making bad decisions?

→ Listen to your gut feeling. It’s there for a reason!  As a sales person and the Head of our Marketing Dept. I know when someone is hesitating about using our services.  The body language is totally different and will change when you switch from services to when you start talking money, especially when it is out of “their perceived price range”.  So my advice here is… if you have a gut feeling, take a day or two to think about what is offered, do the research to make sure they are who they say they are, ask for local references in the area already using the service, make sure it is a fit for your business (this is a big key) and find a friend or coach to discuss it with if you still have doubts.

No matter what you think, do or attempt the final piece of advice is to pray about it!  God gave you the Holy Spirit as a guide. So why not talk to the Master when you are making decisions in your business.

What’s your Excuse?

Time and time again I hear the same excuses when I talk to people about marketing and advertising their business.  When I repeat my thoughts on Marketing, Branding or Advertising, it’s because there are still many people out there that don’t get it!! So let’s take a look at the excuses and let’s see if I can eliminate some of them or explain them where they can be understood.

a) No budget – going into business is serious stuff, if you are not allowing yourself a budget to market and advertise with you are setting your business up for failure. How will anyone ever know about you if you don’t find ways to promote your business.  Even if it is $50 a month you should do some type of media marketing and advertising. And budgeting for your marketing and advertising should be in your business plan.

b) Tried it for a month or two, didn’t work – well as I have been blogging about for months, it is longevity and consistancy that brings awareness to your business. Once people are aware of who you are, where your at and what you offer they will come. Hit and miss advertising is a desperate measure and sends the wrong message.

c) I have enough business I don’t need to promote my business – wow… good for you!  Many business owners really believe that they don’t need any more business.  How many are still in business today after our economy tanked? I have seen many of the businesses that started at the same time as we did, close their doors due to lack of business. Why? They didn’t believe in marketing and advertising their business, they believed the community that was supporting them would be enough to keep them going, fact is those are the same ones that stopped spending when times got tuff. You can never have too much business, customers come and go, only a few are life timers.

d) What’s in it for me – Well believe it or not, I have heard this line before when I have talked to who I thought were potential clients.  My response is simple, maybe the opportunity to keep the doors open.  Why? Because the doors are open to benefit your customers not you! Once that is established, then you can reap the rewards.

e) My business doesn’t need to market or advertise – I really can’t express my true feelings about this statement. No business is that good, if it was we would have seen masses swarming to duplicate it.  This train of thought is only a set up for failure.  Any business needs to market and advertise, even if it is just word of mouth. So when I hear this I know someone’s just talking smack, cause they wouldn’t have any business if they had not already done some form of marketing and advertising.

f) I get all my business from word of mouth referrals – This is one of the  phrases that I rarely will argue with. Why? It’s simple, alot of the older (20+ years in business) and well established businesses have such a great reputation that word of mouth referrals is all they need and accept. And I do mean accept… I have 3 businesses that I have talked to over the last 7 years that are like landmarks in the community.  They have been around so long that they do get all of their new business from referrals, however just so you know …. they still use today’s technology to promote themselves via the internet.  They have websites and magnets/decals on their vehicles to promote the business.

Remember this… NO ONE has absolutely NO MARKETING AND ADVERTISING for their business.  Even the older generation still has the younger generation pushing them along into the 21st Century.


What is the difference between Marketing, Branding and Advertising?

Many small business owners and entrepreneurs are still unclear about which business building activities qualify as marketing, branding and advertising. So I thought I would talk about this again to see if I could help find clarity for those you are not seeing the big picture. Not everything you see on TV, Facebook/Social Media, hear on Radio, or see in media print is advertising. I just heard a million “yeah right’s” ringing in my ears… lol  there is much to learn grasshopper, keep reading and learn the differences.


In my experience, marketing is composed of all those activities which grab the attention of your product’s or service’s and compels ideal clients to do something.  There are some distinctive companies that stand out when it comes to marketing. These companies are not out to shove advertising down your throat, however they are out to get your attention.   Marketing includes those activities you do that raises your potential clients awareness about your product or service and gets your ideal clients to ask for more details about your product or service.

For example: Cell Phones: Verizon, Sprint, Apple… they are not dropping prices to compete for your attention. Why?? Because they know that if they present you with the latest technology,  best apps and greatest connectivity you will buy regardless of the cost.  NO??? How many of you have the new iphones, ipads, ipods, tablets, galaxy S….. these didn’t come with discounted pricetags.  They know what the demand is for technology and they also know exactly what people will pay to have it.

Advertising is initiated when the qualified prospect contacts a representative of your business and starts asking questions about the product or service. Business Owners know they need to advertise their products or services to make the community/potential clients aware of what they offer.  This is the area where businesses are trying to shove their products down your throat…..  Advertising includes activities that move the buyer to make a decision about purchasing your product or service.

For example:  Kolh’s, (50% off, BOGO, this weekend only) Burger King, (B1G1, Dollar Menu, Free Fries w/purchase) Car Dealerships, (0 Down, 0%, low monthly payments).  Everyone of these phrases get the attention of buyers. The think they are saving money so they will go to where the deals are.  Even if that means they are hopscotching all over town, store to store to get the items they need. In the end, they have wasted a lot of gas, more time and not really saved anymore than if they had just stuck to the normal and bought what they wanted and spent a few pennies more.  Gas stations are another one… how many of you drive across town to get gas for 3, 5, 10 cents cheaper?  If you think about it, the gas you wasted driving across town ate up any savings you received when you bought the gas.

Ok now let’s talk about brandingBranding is the creation and development of your company’s brand: the logo, images, slogans, ideas and other information connected to your company or product. Simply…being identified by a logo, slogan or image that directly says “this is who we are”.

For example: Apple, McDonald’s, Coca Cola.  Apple made a stand with an apple image and has created worldwide recognition.  McDonald’s did the same thing with the “Golden Arches” and Coca Cola with “Always Coca Cola and the polar bears.  Each of these conglomerates are world renowned for who they are and what they offer.  The need for explanation is not necessary, if you are told apple, you think computers, iphones, ipads etc… if you are told golden arches… you think McDonald’s.  With Coke it’s simply the word soda.   They have mastered the branding market, you are programmed to think about them when key words are used.  That’s not a bad thing, how many of you would love to have the same recognition as these brands?   If you answered no, then your lying. We would all love to have our companies recognized and as profitable as these.

I hope this has helped to simply break down the 3 areas most important to your business. Marketing, Branding and Advertising is essential to every business, sadly it is also the first to not be utilized due to lack of money or lack of knowledge for the importance in most businesses. target market is a group of customers that the business has decided to aim its marketing efforts and ultimately its merchandise towards. 

A well-defined target market is the first element to a marketing strategy. The target market and the marketing mix variables of productplace (distribution), promotion and price are the four elements of a marketing mix strategy that determine the success of a product in the marketplace.

Once these distinct customers have been defined, a marketing mix strategy of product, distribution, promotion and price can be built by the business to satisfy the target market.

Marketers have outlined four basic strategies to satisfy target markets: undifferentiated marketing or mass marketing, differentiated marketing, concentrated marketing, and micromarketing/ nichemarketing.

Mass marketing is a market coverage strategy in which a firm decides to ignore market segment differences and go after the whole market with one offer. It is the type of marketing (or attempting to sell through persuasion) of a product to a wide audience. The idea is to broadcast a message that will reach the largest number of people possible. Traditionally mass marketing has focused on radio, television and newspapers as the medium used to reach this broad audience.

For sales teams, one way to reach out to target markets is through direct marketing. This is done by buying consumer database based on the segmentation profiles you have defined. These database usually comes with consumer contacts (e.g. email, mobile no., home no., etc.). Caution is recommended when undertaking direct marketing efforts — check the targeted country’s direct marketing laws.
